Iron Horse Equine Internship & Externship Information

Iron Horse Equine is pleased to offer externship opportunities for veterinary students and shadowing experience for undergraduate students. Our full service, equine-exclusive clinic is located in the heart of Colorado horse country.

Externship

Our externs are invited to tailor their experience to their personal interests. They may chose which doctor(s) they would like to shadow each day based on the case load. Externs are not expected to be veterinary assistants and hands-on opportunities will be provided when possible.

Externs are welcome to participate on weekends and for after-hours emergencies and inpatient treatments. Some externs are more interested in emergency medicine than others; please establish at the start of your externship if you will be in town for an included weekend and if you would like to attend emergencies with the on-call DVM.

Housing is only available on a case-by-case basis at this time. Castle Rock and Parker have a variety of AirBnB/VRBO and hotel options as well.

Location

Our practice is located in Elizabeth, Colorado at 330 West Kiowa Avenue (Highway 86). We are located less than an hour from Denver International Airport and 20 minutes from the Colorado Horse Park. Externs are encouraged to explore Denver and the surrounding areas. Colorado is home to a range of outdoor activities including hiking, rafting, skiing/snowboarding and rock climbing. Castlewood Canyon State Park is 15 minutes from our clinic.

Scheduling

Typically, we schedule one to three week externships, but applicants may request any date range that suits their schedule and will be accommodated as best as possible. Due to the seasonality of our business, we suggest students attend between mid March and late October for the best learning opportunities.

Application

Extern applicants may contact Dr. Jesha Marcy-Quay at (303) 660-4600 or email application materials to drquay@ironhorseequine.net. Students should be enrolled and in good standing at an AVMA accredited veterinary school.

  1. Letter of Intent
  2. Resume or CV
  3. Suggested dates of attendance

Once an externship has been scheduled, we will also need proof of liability insurance (e.g. AVMA PLIT) at least 30 days prior to the start date.

Undergraduate or high school students interested in shadowing experience may contact Dr. Jesha Marcy-Quay at (303) 660-4600 or email drquay@ironhorseequine.net to schedule their visit(s). Please express why you are interested in our practice in your email or phone call.
